DescriptionIf you have a complaint about your bank, insurance company or financial firm – you can usually get things sorted out satisfactorily simply by contacting the firm and explaining what’s gone wrong. But what if that still doesn’t settle matters? If you’ve already complained direct to your bank, insurer or finance firm and are still unhappy, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. Set up by law, the ombudsman's service is free for consumers to use.
The ombudsman has official powers to settle financial complaints you've not been able to sort out yourself. It is completely independent, deciding what’s fair by looking at the facts of each individual complaint – taking into account both your point of view and that of the firm concerned. If the ombudsman thinks you’ve been treated fairly it will explain why. But if the ombudsman decides the firm needs to put things right for you – it can order the firm to do so.
The ombudsman can look at complaints about a wide range of financial matters – from problems with a credit card or an insurance claim, to disputes about investments.
