Are women happier than men?

Women tend to be much happier than their male counterparts, according to a new survey.

The research by internet bank smile found that 64 per cent of women described themselves as "truly happy", while only 59 per cent of men could say the same.

However, while the sexes differed in that response, they were united in agreeing that the birth of their first child, meeting their partner and getting married were the happiest three events of their lives.

Other events which would be remembered fondly from the past when joining the over-50s included passing the driving test and purchasing a house for the first time.

John Barker, head of smile, commented: "The research shows that there are many things in life which make us happy. We understand that the best things in life are free, but we also understand the value of financial security."

This comes after research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revealed the recession has led to an increase in job satisfaction.

The organisation believes many people are simply happy to have a job at all during the economic crisis.
