Britons 'rediscovering UK' with caravan holidays

Over 50s are turning to caravan and motorhome holidays as a cheap, comfortable and varied alternative to foreign travel, according to a new report.

Booking figures from the Camping and Caravanning Club have demonstrated an increase of nearly 40 per cent from last year, while the National Caravan Council is estimating an additional two million caravan holidays will be taken nationwide in 2009.

In the view of Nikki Nichol of the Caravan Club, the increase in interest in motorhome holidays can be attributed to holidaymakers choosing to rediscover the sights of Britain instead of contending with high exchange rates and ticket prices for trips abroad.

She said: "The weather is set to be fantastic this summer, so people are falling back in love with the UK and exploring what's in their own garden, so to speak."

Ms Nichol also cited the luxury of modern caravans as a reason for their increasing popularity, as well as the flexibility of travelling "as and when you want to".
