Brits 'looking to domestic holidays in recession'

Over 50s holidaymakers looking to save money during the recession may wish to consider spending the summer in the UK instead of travelling abroad.

This is according to VisitBritain, a national tourism agency, which has claimed that more and more people will look to British-based travel opportunities this year.

A spokesperson from VisitBritain pointed to research from VisitEngland and VisitLondon, which suggests that as many as one in five people who travelled abroad last year will be looking homeward this year.

This could represent as many as five million extra visitors to UK destinations, the spokesperson added.

He said: "The recession is certainly encouraging more people to consider a holiday at home."

Indeed, more people will be looking to British tourism websites when researching their holidays this year, he commented.

According to Garmin, the top ten UK holiday hotspots are London, the Lake District, Brighton and Edinburgh, among others.

A survey from the company stated that one-fifth of people will be taking their family on a sight-seeing and history break this year, instead of heading to the beach.
