Cancer charity warns of sunbed risk

Over 50s who cannot afford to take a foreign holiday this year have been urged to avoid using sunbeds.

According to Cancer Research UK, more than a third of Britons are less likely to head to a sunny destination this summer because of the recession.

However, a similar proportion said they will be disappointed if they do not get a tan, which means many people may turn to sunbeds to achieve a summer glow.

Katy Scammell, spokesperson for Cancer Research UK, believes that if people use sunbeds, they could be putting their health at risk.

"Not only do the harmful rays increase your risk of skin cancer, but they also lead to premature ageing and the appearance of lines, wrinkles and coarse, leathery skin," she commented.

Ms Scammell added that if people really want to have a tan this summer, they should fake it instead.

A recent poll by Cancer Research UK found that eight in ten sunbed users have increased their risk of developing a potentially fatal form of skin cancer by about 75 per cent.
