Charity calls for end to 'shocking' over 50s poverty

Over 50s charity Age Concern has called on the government to take action over what it describes as "worrying and shameful" levels of pensioner poverty in the UK.

Recent statistics from the European Commission have revealed that nearly a third of over-65s in the UK are currently living in poverty, a rate comparable to that of Lithuania and far in advance of the EU average of 19 per cent.

The charity has suggested that ministers should feel ashamed of the figures and called for a more coherent government strategy to tackle the problem.

In particular, Age Concern demanded that the process of applying for and receiving benefits and pensioner credit be made easier, calling the current setup a "bureaucratic minefield".

A spokesman for the charity said: "I think the results are pretty shocking. Our society is aging and this problem will only get worse unless urgent steps are taken to sort it out."
