Curry spices 'can help protect against heart disease'

Certain spices and ingredients used in curry dishes contain agents that could help over 50s to combat heart disease, according to a nutrition expert.

Juliette Kellow, a nutritionist for diet website Weight Loss Resources, said the antioxidant content of curry spices helps to regulate the chemical causes of cancer and heart disease.

She said: "Having antioxidants in our diet can [help] reduce free radicals and we know that spices tend to be a good source of those antioxidants."

Additionally, the strong flavour of such spices allows for lower salt content, another key cause of heart problems.

This research comes after scientists in Boston discovered that turmeric, a spice which is used in most Indian meals, also contains the chemical curcumin, which is an active agent in combating obesity.

However, Ms Kellow reminded dieters to bear the fat content of the curry dish in mind when assessing its overall health benefits.
