Energy bills 'could be set to rise'

Heating and energy bills across the UK could be set to skyrocket over the next decade according to new research by a price comparison site.

A report from uSwitch has highlighted the fact that average energy bill prices have doubled in the last five years, which if left unchecked could see homeowners receiving household bills of nearly 5,000 in ten years time.

Such figures will be of particular concern to over 50s, for whom basic needs such as fuel bills represent a large percentage of their budgets, according to recent figures from Alliance Trust.

The price comparison site indicated that the aging UK population is contributing to rising fuel demands and urged energy customers to ensure they are as economical as possible with their usage to avoid finding themselves out of pocket.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "My advice to consumers is to invest in making your home more energy efficient, reduce the amount of energy you use and make sure you are paying the lowest possible price for it."
