Foreign holidays 'remain more popular'

Over 50s looking for popular holiday options have been advised that overseas trips to destinations such as Europe remain in fashion, despite predictions that Britons might choose to remain at home this summer.

A survey conducted by Wanderlust and the Association of Independent Travel Operators (AITO) has revealed that less than 50 per cent of holidaymakers are considering a break of more than two weeks in the UK.

This is compared to more than 60 per cent of consumers planning a trip elsewhere in the world.

Ian Bradley, a spokesperson for AITO, suggested that UK residents are responding to revised weather forecasts suggesting a gloomy British summer by looking for affordable holiday options abroad.

He said: "Somewhere like Greece or Cyprus offer great value, as does Turkey, and the flights aren't that far away either. Also great value are Egypt and Morocco."

Mr Bradley also suggested that France could be an affordable destination due to the relatively low travel costs.
