France and Spain 'still popular among holidaymakers'

Over 50s on the lookout for a popular and affordable holiday destination may not need to look any further than traditional locations such as Spain and France.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that the two European countries remained the most popular places to visit among Brits in 2008, accounting for 36 per cent of all foreign travel between them.

Frances Tuke, a spokeswoman for the Association of British Travel Agents, suggested that the destinations have remained well-attended despite the strong euro due to the large number of Britons with conveniently placed holiday homes.

She also reminded holidaymakers that many last-minute holiday deals have been released for locations such as Spain, with reductions on accommodation and food available for those willing to seek them out.

Ms Tuke said: "There is so much on offer in places like Spain and France. Even though we have seen a change in the exchange rate, we do also see very good value for money in Spain."
