Greece 'remains a popular choice for Britons'

British holidaymakers continue to be attracted to Greece and its islands, according to the Greek National Tourism Organisation.

Sofia Panayiotaki, director of the UK and Ireland office, said Brits love "sunny" Greece, so the country makes a popular summer holiday destination.

However, there is also a growing trend for Greek city breaks, as well as eco-tourism and outdoor activity holidays.

And Ms Panayiotaki said that a lot of older people go to Greece to enjoy holidays for the over 50s once they retire.

"There is a trend of people buying houses in Greece and they buy property for their retirement too," she added. "Britons do decide to come to retire in Greece."

According to a recent news story from Thomson Reuters, figures from the Touristic Research Institute show that there was a 7.6 per cent rise in visitors to Athens in July.

Athens is the capital of Greece and is home to numerous sights and attractions, including the Parthenon - the temple of the Greek goddess Athena.
