Healthy diet 'better than supplements'



Over 50s looking for the best way to maintain health have been advised that a naturally balanced diet should generally be preferred to pills and dietary supplements.

Heather Caswell, nutrition scientist for the British Nutrition Foundation, explained that although supplementary pills are sometimes necessary for those with specific illnesses or age-related requirements, a natural diet remains more medically reliable in the long term.

The comments come after a statement by the British Heart Foundation that eating fresh fruit and vegetables is preferable to unproven supplementary medication.

Ms Caswell said: "Our stance is that if you consume a healthy balanced diet, you should not need to take supplements; you should get everything you need from the foods that you eat."

She went on to explain that supplement pills often contain more of a specific vitamin or compound than the body can usefully process and that such medication excludes a lot of the other potentially beneficial ingredients contained by natural produce.
