Help for disabled holidaymakers 'is available'

Assistance for mobility-impaired over 50s exists despite a lack of public knowledge, according to one expert.

Although airlines do not always publicise the fact that facilities are available, disabled holidaymakers should be sure to look into what is on offer from their airline when booking a holiday, according to Brian Seaman, head of consultancy at Tourism for All.

Mr Seaman explained that people may not be aware of the infrastructure in place to help them, but that it does exist and can significantly help travellers with special needs.

"We encourage people to seek assistance," he said.

"They are advised to contact their airline … so that everything can be put in place … to make sure they have as smooth a journey as possible," he added.

Mr Seaman also advised people to check whether their holiday insurance adequately covers their needs and whether equipment they may need, such as a wheelchair, is available on their flight or at the holiday resort.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority decreed that airports must provide services for disabled people and those with limited mobility.
