Holiday forgetfulness 'costing Brits 1 billion'

Absent-minded over 50s who but items on holiday to replace those that they forgot to pack may be costing themselves more money than they realise, according to new research.

A new poll conducted by Abbey Credit Cards has revealed that British holidaymakers may be costing themselves up to 1 billion altogether to replace essential items forgotten during the chaos of packing.

Although cameras rated as the top holiday essential that UK travellers cannot do without while abroad, it also topped the list for items that Britons leave at home.

Callum Gibson, head of credit cards at Abbey, stated that the figures demonstrate the need plan holiday packing more meticulously.

He said: "Holiday packing often falls to the last minute we should maybe all just take a few extra minutes this summer to ensure we've packed everything we need before setting off for the airport."

The advice will be of particular interest to the many holidaymakers choosing to defy the recession and changing exchange rates to travel to Europe this summer.

Recent figures released by Holiday-Rentals named Greece, the Canaries and the Spanish Costas among the European travel destinations to see an increase in holiday bookings this year.
