Holidaymakers 'can shop cleverly for cheaper trips'

Over 50s looking for a more affordable holiday option this year could benefit from considerable savings through savvy shopping.

Research conducted by online travel agency has revealed the changing priorities of British holidaymakers, with factors such as cheap accommodation and free activities increasingly valued over star ratings and reviews.

As such, consumer site Which? has recommended a number of money-saving tips for holiday shoppers, such as avoiding peak travel times like school holidays or booking very early or very late to score potential bargains.

The consumer group also recommended such non-euro zone countries as Croatia and Egypt as affordable destinations, as well as stressing the importance of diligently shopping around for the best prices.

Jonathan Mitcham, principle researcher for consumer site Which? Holiday, said: "Check out similar holidays online, and if there is a particular package you are keen on, use comparison websites to see which online agent may provide it for the cheapest price."
