Homecare provision for over 50s 'must be overhauled'

Charity Counsel and Care has called for the government to take "urgent action" to address problems with the UK's homecare system for over 50s.

A charity has called for improvements to be made to the "unfair" system currently in place to cater for over 50s who require homecare.

The recent government green paper Shaping the Future of Care Together has revealed that the inequalities of the current framework are seeing older people receiving varying levels of funding dependent on their geographical location.

Moreover, many of those with more expensive needs are even being forced to exhaust almost all of their savings before they are entitled to government assistance.

Charity group Counsel and Care has condemned the current system, stating that they demonstrate a "yawning gap between government rhetoric and reality around the care of older people".

Caroline Bernard, a spokesperson for the group, stated that the government must therefore use the current national debate over care standards as its opportunity to remedy these issues.

She said: "We need urgent action to address the care funding crisis."
