Homeowners encouraged to secure gardens

Over 50s are being encouraged to consider the security of their gardens, as many people in the UK are having expensive items stolen.

Home insurer More Than stated that a typical garden contains costly purchases such as furniture, outdoor heaters and various paraphernalia.

This, it warned, all adds up to a large amount, which means homeowners could be out of pocket in the event they are stolen.

More Than has therefore urged people to take a number of security measures to reduce the chances of falling victim to theft.

For instance, it said keeping hedges tidy and trim would limit the number of places a thief can hide, while lighting may put them off entering the garden in the first place.

The company added that gravel driveways are another security option, as the fact they are noisy to walk on could put thieves off.

This follows similar advice from esure, which said the arrival of spring could lead to more people leaving items such as toys and garden tools outside overnight.

According to the firm, this could attract opportunistic thieves who are looking for easy pickings.
