Landscape gardening

If you are thinking about ways to freshen up your garden, but you think only professionals can do great landscape gardening, think again. You have the ability, all you have to do is follow a few basic steps to get the garden you have always wanted.

Itís much like painting a beautiful picture. Every picture that has a central point of focus seems to grab the most attention. The same is true for gardening. Think about what you want the main point of your new garden to be and the rest of the garden will practically design itself. You donít have to get your entire garden dug up, you can modify your existing landscape to help to create a healthy and beautiful garden.

Start by assessing your surroundings. Take note of the quality of the soil and establish whether it is dry or moist. Getting to know your existing plants, flowers and shrubs will help you to decide where to place them to ensure they remain healthy. Also take note of where the sun hits your garden. The next step is to create a vision of what you want, and then you landscape gardening can begin.

You may want to aim to allow lots of space for the lawn because it creates the illusion that the grounds are bigger than they actually are. Add single large tree, or a group of small ones, but be sure not to add too many because the end result will be a busy and overcrowded garden which can eliminate all feeling of relaxation that a garden is supposed to evoke in the first place. Avoid putting trees in the centre, allow them to create the background of your garden. Donít put them too close to the house as they may prevent sunlight from entering. When choosing which trees to put in your garden, try and go for something unique. Try and find a tree with a good shape, with something interesting about its bark, leaves, flowers or fruit.

Now that you have an idea of what you want in your garden, consider whether you want straight lines or unique lines. This will depend on how formal you want your garden to look. Straight, even paths are good for a formal effect, while curved paths can create a relaxed atmosphere. Whatever you decide make sure that the path actually leads somewhere.

These are just a few things you may want to consider while planning ahead, to avoid having to sit with a garden of sand until you create an idea of what you want. Landscape gardening is not limited, so let yourself go and remember that itís your home and your garden, do what will make you happy.
