Last minute holidays 'can offer affordable deals'

Last-minute bookings could be a good method of securing cheap holidays for over 50s, according to a report.

Over 50s looking for affordable holiday options may wish to consider searching online for last-minute bookings, according to a report.

New research from holiday services provider Hotels.com has revealed that last-minute searches have increased by 400 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Among the sunny destinations which have seen the greatest year-on-year increases in enquiries are the likes of Split in Croatia, Marrakech in Morroco and Albufeira in Portugal.

Alison Couper, director of communications at Hotels.com, claimed that the upturn is indicative of the amount of cheap deals which are available to holidaymakers who have left it late to look for travel options.

She said: "There are some real bargains on September breaks to be found on our site for those who want to get away for some late summer sun."

This comes after research from online tourism solution provider IVRA revealed that 18.5 per cent of online bookings this year are expected to be made by over 55s.
