Malta 'an affordable choice for UK holidaymakers'

Over 50s looking for an affordable holiday destination may wish to look to Malta as a cheaper alternative to traditional locations, according to a new report.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics have suggested that UK holidaymakers may be looking to tighten their belts during the recession, with the number of trips abroad dropping by ten per cent.

According to price comparison site Cheapflights, this puts countries such as Malta in a good position to capitalise on increased demand for value-for-money mid-haul destinations.

The site has observed a 74 per cent increase in searches for flights to the country since last year, as holidaymakers look to take advantage of its relative cheapness in comparison to more established eurozone countries.

Francesca Ecsery, global sales director of Cheapflights, said: "Fans of the Mediterranean are realising [Malta's] beaches offer a more affordable alternative to Spain and Greece."

Other countries recommended for their cost-effectiveness include Turkey and Tunisia.
