Met Office issues heat health warning to over 50s

Over 50s have been warned to make doubly sure they keep cool in the coming days after being issued with a heat health warning by the Met Office.

Predictions of daytime temperatures reaching 30C have triggered the service's hot weather health warning system, developed in tandem with the Department of Health to protect elderly and vulnerable UK residents.

Over 50s have been warned to be particularly wary of night time temperatures which in some areas may not fall below 18C, as well as being cautioned that even hotter temperatures may yet be on the horizon.

Andy Page, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "The very warm conditions will last well into next week, with the hottest days of the summer so far and a 60 per cent chance of reaching 32C."

Those sensitive to summer weather were also warned by the British Association of Dermatologists last week to ensure that their skin is sufficiently protected when out in the sun to avoid the risk of malignant melanoma.
