New Alzheimer's discovery 'the biggest in years'

A new study into a potential Alzheimer's treatment technique has been described a charity as having "really exciting" implications for over 50s health.

A new study which has isolated a potential treatment method for over 50s suffering from Alzheimer's disease has been hailed as the "biggest discovery in fifteen years of research".

The Alzheimer's Research Trust has described the discovery of two genes which may be linked to the onset of the illness as "really exciting".

Andrew Scheuber, a spokesman for the charity, suggested that further research into these genetic pathways could allow scientists to influence and control them, allowing for potential treatment methods to be established.

In the meantime, the trust called for over 50s to live as healthy a lifestyle as possible in order to reduce their own susceptibility to the illness.

Methods highlighted include exercising regularly and eating healthily, as well as remaining socially involved and active.

Mr Scheuber also suggested that brain training activities could possibly help to promote mental health, citing a recent study which suggested that older people who play chess or cards have a lower dementia risk.

However, he added that "much more research is needed" to prove this conclusively.
