Northern Ireland moves to clarify over 50s financial relief

The Northern Ireland Executive is to take action to clarify the financial assistance available to over 50s and other vulnerable homeowners in the country.

Land and Property Services is allying with groups such as the Citizens Advice Bureau to produce leaflets which will outline the systems of rate relief and allowances for which pensioners can apply.

It is hoped that the publication of the leaflets will clear up misconceptions about schemes such as lone pensioner allowances, which many erroneously believe to be means-tested, as well as encouraging older people to claim the money to which they are entitled.

Pat Hutchinson, manager of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Newtownabbey, said: "People across Northern Ireland are missing out on money that is rightfully theirs and could make a huge difference to their quality of life."

Last month, the government launched a new green paper on over 50s care which laid out a variety of possible new financing options for care services, which are designed to bring an end to the means-tested system.
