Older women 'more at risk from breast cancer'

Women over 50 should take lifestyle precautions to guard against the increasing danger of breast cancer as they grow older.

Dr Emma Pennery, clinical director of the charity Breast Cancer Care, has stated that being a woman and being over 50 are the two highest risk factors involved in the contraction of breast cancer.

The statement is corroborated by figures from the National Office for Statistics which show that 80 per cent of all new breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women over 50, with those in the 55 to 69 age group being most at risk.

However, Dr Pennery advised that women concerned about the disease could nevertheless take certain precautions to minimise their susceptibility.

She said over 50s can lower their risk by "keeping your weight within healthy limits, taking regular exercise, keeping alcohol within moderate limits and not taking too much high saturated fat in your diet".
