Online dating 'can provide social opportunities in busy times'

Over 50s looking to the internet as a potential portal to a relationship have been told by a relationship expert that dating services can be a great way to widen social horizons.

Christine Northam, a counsellor working for relationship expert Relate, has described online dating services as being very much in line with the current times, allowing busy people to find and forge social opportunities in their own time that they might otherwise be missing.

It would seem that an increasing number are taking advantage of the possibilities offered by such services, with recent research by researcher Mintel showing a 20 per cent growth in the market last year.

Ms Northam claimed to be confident that this growth will continue, and also saw no reason why the stigmas currently attached to online dating cannot be shaken off.

She said: "You can do it when you are at home and you can fit it in with your life and you can meet people that way so it's definitely got a future."
