For the over 50s, meeting someone special seems to be much harder than it is for younger people, but luckily modern technology has helped.

According to dating expert Sasha Madarasz, the internet had made it much easier to find and chat to new people with whom a spark may be ignited.

In an article for 3news.co.nz, she points out that people can read through profiles and look at pictures from the comfort of their own home.

They can then exchange emails and chat to others online before meeting up, allowing them to establish whether they have any shared interests.

"It's also possible to find romance through social networking sites or you could even start your own blog," Ms Madarasz stated.

Those who are doubtful about whether they will meet the right person on the online dating scene should not worry.

Relationships expert Valerie Kostrzewa told Examiner.com that subscribers to online dating sites come from all walks of life, so finding someone compatible should not be difficult, provided people have patience.
