Online dating 'safer than meeting people at a bar'

People who choose to find love over the internet could find it much safer than meeting a stranger on a night out.

This is the view of Helen Jane, from Stockport in Cheshire, who said many people in the UK are looking to find the ideal partner.

However, she told the Sunday Sun that many are reluctant to engage in online dating, as there appears to be a stigma attached to it.

This is despite the fact that interacting with a person online can be less risky than other options, such as chatting to a person on a night out.

"It feels safer than just meeting someone in a bar or a club," Ms Jane commented.

"You have got to get to know them in advance."

She added that people should not think that online dating sites are "full of weirdos", because that is "just not the case".

The comments come after Jamie Gavin of comScore told New Media Age that the number of Britons using online dating sites went up by 13 per cent between September 2008 and February 2009.
