Over 50s are 'the happiest of any age group'

Over 50s are increasingly defying societal expectations and stereotypes by living the most fulfilling and contented lifestyles of any age group, according to a new report.

Standard Life has published new research which questions the ageist stereotype that older people are unadventurous and unhappy, revealing that over 55s are the most likely to travel abroad and be in satisfying relationships.

In response to the findings, the financial services company called for a change in attitudes from the government and finance industries to help over 50s to continue to enjoy a high quality of life.

John Lawson, head of pensions policy at Standard Life, said: "The financial services industry must respond and do more to connect this excitement for the future to saving into lifelong products that will allow people to achieve their goals."

Last month, research by analyst Experian revealed that over 50s were the group most likely to take advantage of the government's car scrappage scheme due to their healthy savings and comfortable lifestyles.
