Over 50s 'becoming increasingly web-savvy'

The over 50s are giving younger people a run for their money when it comes to using the internet, new research shows.

According to a survey by Just Retirement, almost half of older people use email regularly, while two-thirds shop online.

Many are also using the web to research over 50s finance options, with 85 per cent of silver surfers checking out deals on the internet.

Nigel Barlow, head of research at Just Retirement, said: "It's inevitable that the older generation will catch up with younger age groups on online activity."

The findings support views expressed recently by Carmel Dennis, project manager at New Media Trend Watch.

She said the over 50s are increasingly using the internet to book holidays, as they are becoming more confident with the technology.

Indeed, she said older people tend to have more free time and therefore find it easier to make last-minute online bookings than their younger counterparts.
