Over 50s charity calls for swift action on care reforms

Over 50s charity Age Concern and Help the Aged has called for the government to institute its proposals for revising the UK care service as quickly as possible.

The government earlier this week published a new green paper on the care service which recommended the replacement of the controversial means-tested financing setup with a fairer and more universal system.

Though the charity welcomed the initiative as a step forward for a care system it described as "in crisis", it nevertheless called for a swift resolution to the debate over the new initiative's funding.

A spokesman for Age Concern and Help the Aged said: "It is important to discuss the [financing] options but it is also important to realise that we need to inject the right amount of funding into social care and do that quickly."

The spokesman added that all the major political parties need to realise that care provision should be considered an urgent priority due to the increasing number of aging and vulnerable people in society.
