Over 50s 'looking for more active holidays'

Over 50s are increasingly looking for new experiences and activities while on holiday, according to a new report.

Activity holidays are becoming an increasingly popular holiday option for the over 50s, according to an expert.

New research conducted by Mintel has revealed that British holidaymakers are increasingly looking to holidays to supply experiences such as museum visits, learning new skills and sampling local culture.

According to holiday group TUI Travel, this is equally true of silver surfers, who are enjoying activities such as trekking, sailing or skiing with their families.

Lynsey Devon, activity sector public relations manager for TUI Travel's adventure division, suggested that this is because people are becoming more likely to take away more lasting enjoyment from their holidays than simple relaxation.

She said: "Back in the 1970s, people went on holiday to lie on beaches Now they are looking to go away, have an experience and then come back and tell everybody about it."

Ms Devon added that the fast pace of modern life may explain this trend, as people are now more keen to use their leisure time to go away and try new things.
