Over 50s 'looking to enjoy retirement'

Over 50s are increasingly looking to take advantage of retirement to explore new opportunities in life, according to research.

Retirement is increasingly becoming seen as an opportunity for over 50s to cut loose and enjoy life, according to new research.

A survey conducted by insurer Aviva has revealed that 72 per cent of retirees are rating their first year of retirement as the best of their lives as they look to pursue new goals and interests.

These include taking up new hobbies such as learning a musical instrument or photography, while others are looking to travel the world, start a business or even find love.

This comes after insurer RIAS last week stated that more and more over 50s are becoming more free-spirited and adventurous as they grow older.

Paul Goodwin, head of pensions at Aviva, therefore called for those approaching their retirement to ensure they save diligently in order to finance their large-scale plans.

He said: "To make the most of this time in life it's vital to be prepared financially. The earlier people start saving the more money they'll have to make the most of their retirement years."
