Over 50s 'make do and mend' during recession

Many over 50s in the UK are reverting to wartime methods to broaden their finance options during the recession.

Research by Age Concern and Help the Aged found that nearly three-quarters of people in this demographic have adopted this strategy to help their money go further.

The study showed that many are opting to buy reduced-price food, reusing leftovers and even growing their own vegetables.

Michelle Mitchell, director of the charity, commented: "The thrifty skills many older people can tap into represents an invaluable resource in times of recession."

However, she said that people living in 21st century Britain should not end up in a position where they are once again enduring the hardship of the early 1940s.

This comes after a separate study by uSwitch found that many people in the UK are choosing to adopt more eco-friendly practices to save money during the recession.
