Over 50s 'may be missing out on online bargains'

Failing to shop online regularly could be proving costly for the over 50s, according to new research.

An older people's charity has called for over 50s to ensure they are making full use of the internet to shop for products or else risk missing out on the best prices available.

New research commissioned by Age Concern and Help the Aged has revealed that younger people have increased their online spending at two-and-a-half times the rate of pensioners in the last twelve years.

The charity warned that failing to use online sources for shopping could be costing older people hundreds of pounds as they miss out on the cheapest prices, rates and deals.

As a result, Nancy Johnson, technology and digital inclusion development manager for the charity, suggested that the government should do more to provide training to help over 50s get online.

She said: "Missing out of the best savings rates or being able to compare prices online can cost older people dearly. The internet isn't a luxury any more but a necessity."

This comes after a survey by Just Retirement revealed that older people are less likely to be confident about using the internet to manage their personal finances, causing them to miss out on a number of convenient and flexible services.
