Over 50s on mobility scooters 'face problems getting around'

A Derby councillor has called for improvements to be made to town centres in order to make them more accessible for over 50s on mobility scooters.

A local councillor from Derby has drawn attention to the numerous problems faced by over 50s trying to get around town using mobility scooters.

Labour councillor Ranjit Banwait recently spent a day using one of the devices in Derby in order to better understand the problems faced by older people with mobility problems.

The idea was prompted by the suggestion of local pensioner Jean Wallace, who accompanied Mr Banwait for the day, reports the Derby Telegraph.

Over the course of the ride, he discovered that progress around the city was impeded and made unnecessarily difficult by high kerbs, bollards or poorly designed and inaccessible shopping centres.

As a result, Mr Banwait is now calling for improvements to the infrastructure of the city, particularly the lowering of kerb heights, to be made a priority in order to assist over 50s.

He stated that the current situation is leading to their "quality of life being affected on a daily basis".
