Over 50s 'sceptical about state welfare system'

Over 50s are more sceptical about the government's ability to provide adequate state welfare for the unemployed than any other age group, according to new research.

Over 50s are becoming increasingly sceptical about the government's ability to provide an adequate "safety net" with its welfare provision, according to new research.

Statistics published by Scottish Provident have revealed that 51 per cent of those aged between 45 and 54 are doubtful as to whether or not current state welfare provision would allow them to maintain a modern standard of living if they lost their job.

This is higher than any other age group polled and comes at a time in which joblessness is on the increase as a result of the recession.

Susan Barclay, head of marketing at Scottish Provident, suggested that over 50s are right to be concerned over the level of funding provided to the unemployed and vulnerable.

She said: "The average increase in jobseekers' allowance of just under 6 doesn't come close to the cost of living in today's world."

Last month, over 50s business initiative PRIME suggested that older people who find themselves out of work are finding it increasingly difficult to secure a new job.
