Over 50s 'should receive heating bill assistance'

National Energy Action has called for a reduction in heating bill charges for over 50s.

An energy efficiency promotion group has called for a new social tariff to be introduced in order to provide lower heating bills for over 50s.

National Energy Action (NEA) has made the recommendation in response to an Age Concern and Help the Aged report which suggested that older people are facing higher energy bills despite lowering their consumption.

Maria Wardrobe, director of communications at NEA, suggested that this is a dangerous trend, as poor heating provision can be particularly hazardous for the over 50s.

She underlined the fact that excessive cold can worsen existing health conditions and increase the likelihood of strokes.

As a result, Ms Wardrobe called for energy providers to introduce the social tariff, as well as promoting the improvement of energy efficiency measures in UK homes.

NEA also reminded older people to collect all the benefits that may be available to them in order to help them to pay for their heating provision.
