Over 50s 'struggling to deal with IT problems'

Over 50s are becoming more confident with PCs but are still having problems coping with errors, according to research.

Over 50s are still struggling to cope with computer jargon and errors despite being more comfortable with IT, according to new research.

A study conducted by consumer body Which? has revealed that almost eight in ten over 50s now feel either very competent or fairly competent when it comes to using a computer.

However, this figure is counterbalanced by the confusion many still feel over technical terminology, particularly of the sort offered up when the computer is having problems.

Among the specific issues which silver surfers are struggling with are crashes and viruses, as well as knowing which sites to trust.

A spokeswoman for Which? said that this showed that there is not enough guidance provided by computer courses for over 50s on what to do should something unexpected arise.

She said: "When it's going right they feel really confident, but if something is going wrong they don't know where to turn."
