Over 50s 'turning to online holiday booking'

The over 50s are increasingly turning to the internet to make their holiday bookings, it has been claimed.

People aged over 50 are familiar with the internet because of the increasing presence of the web in workplaces, meaning they are more likely to book a holiday online.

This is according to Carmel Dennis, project manager at New Media Trend Watch.

Ms Dennis explained that older people may have the freedom to book more last-minute short breaks online, since they do not have restrictions such as child commitments to consider.

"The internet provides plenty of last minute opportunities for those who have the time and money to take advantage of them," Ms Dennis commented.

She went on to say that women have historically been the more proactive ones when it comes to researching holidays, a trend that has been reflected in today's internet use.

A study conducted by online tourism solution provider IVRA recently revealed that online travel bookings by people over the age of 55 is set to reach 18.5 per cent of total bookings this year.
