Pensioners 'not immune to recession'

Rising prices and falling interest rates mean that over-50s are not immune to the economic downturn, an expert has warned.

Kate Jopling, head of public affairs at Age Concern and Help the Aged, said all sections of society are being hit by the recession.

This, she stated, includes older people, as they too are faced by matters such as higher commodity prices.

Indeed, Ms Jopling said high food prices are forcing many low-income pensioners to skip meals in order to get by.

"Older people are by no means immune," she insisted.

"We are really particularly concerned about the impact on those low income groups."

Ms Jopling added that recent interest rates cuts have had a negative effect on those who rely on their savings.

The Bank of England recently reduced interest rates to 0.5 per cent - the lowest level in the history of the institution.
