Recession worries 'are causing Brits to lose sleep'

Over 50s having restless nights due to money worries have been informed that they are far from alone as more and more UK residents are suffering sleep problems over financial stress.

New research by analysts Harris Interactive has revealed that two-thirds of Brits are struggling to sleep at least once a month due to economic worries, while a third of respondents are finding themselves kept awake at night more than once a week.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of mental health charity Mind, explained: "Job insecurity can really put a strain on working relationships and motivation levels, and money worries alone can cause problems such as stress, anxiety and depression."

Many of those affected are finding different ways to relieve their stress, with 50 per cent of those of working age stating that they use their laptops to do further work in bed.

However, the Work Foundation advises in favour of a separation of professional and personal concerns where possible, stating that a healthy work/life balance will result in greater satisfaction and productivity.
