Reducing blood pressure 'vital' for preventing strokes

Over 50s conscious of health issues have been advised that combating high blood pressure remains one of the best ways to reduce the risk of stroke.

The Stroke Association estimates that 150,000 suffer from strokes each year, with 67,000 of those being fatal, making it the UK's third biggest killer.

In addition, research by the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer branch in Norfolk (EPIC Norfolk) stated the annual cost of caring for victims of stroke is 7 billion.

Joanne Murphy, research liaison officer for the Stroke Association, said 40 per cent of strokes could be prevented by getting treatment for high blood pressure.

In addition, Ms Murphy emphasised the positive effect healthy living can have on the likelihood of strokes.

She said: "Improving your diet, drinking alcohol in moderation, not smoking and being active can all help reduce your risk of stroke."

EPIC Norfolk figures suggest that such measures can reduce the likelihood of suffering stroke by around half.
