Regular eye tests 'important for over 50s'

An ocular health charity has called for over 50s to undergo regular eye tests in order to improve the detection of glaucoma among older people.

Valerie Greatorex, senior Sightline operator at the International Glaucoma Association (IGA), has advised anyone over the age of 40 to ensure they have their eyes checked out by an ophthalmologist at least once every two years.

It is estimated that two per cent of the population over this age will suffer from a form of the disease at some point, with serious glaucoma cases leading to patchy loss of vision and blindness.

However, IGA statistics suggest that 95 per cent of those whose condition is detected early on will be able to retain useful sight for the rest of their lives.

Ms Greatorex said: "We need regular sight tests in order to pick it up because this is the only way that people are going to know whether they have got this condition or not."
