Scottish MP demands more assistance for pensioners

Borders MP Michael Moore has called on the government to do more to provide financial assistance for over 50s in the region who are currently living in poverty.

The Scottish Liberal Democrat minister has condemned the insufficient nature of the basic state pension and the complexity of means-tested benefits, both of which he suggests are contributing to a lower quality of life for vulnerable Borders pensioners.

Mr Moore's comments come in response to recent figures published by Eurostat, which showed that almost a third of older people in the UK are living in relative deprivation, making Britain among one of the worst countries in the EU for pensioner poverty.

He said: "These statistics are shocking and illustrate clearly how successive governments have failed vulnerable pensioners Ministers must do more to help those pensioners in the Borders who are struggling to make ends meet."

This echoes the sentiments expressed by over 50s charity Age Concern last week, which described the figures as "worrying and shameful".
