Travel insurance 'a necessity' for overseas holidays

Over 50s looking for a stress-free holiday have been reminded that purchasing travel insurance should be an essential part of their preparations.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers Association, has reminded holidaymakers that insurance may be all they have to rely on should something go wrong while abroad.

New regulations put into place by the Financial Services Authority this year are aiming to make purchasing appropriate insurance packages easier for consumers by ensuring that travel agents who sell travel insurance have competent staff on hand for advice.

Mr Trudgill conceded that purchasing the right insurance can often be a complicated process, but stated that it remains necessary to reduce the risk of becoming stranded in a non-English-speaking country.

He said: "Travel insurance is as important as a suitcase. Don't underestimate it. Always buy it, it is cheap to buy but make sure you are buying the right thing for you."
