Trips abroad 'are more expensive during school holidays'

Over 50s who are looking to take a trip abroad could bag cheaper deals by not traveling during the school holidays.

According to figures from Abbey, parents who take their children abroad during the summer break are paying up to 40 per cent more than they would at other times of the year.

Premium prices were found to be charged from mid-July onwards - before most schools in the UK have broken up for their six-week holiday.

While this means parents are liable to pay far more when they take their children overseas, this could be good news for other sections of the population.

For example, over 50s who want an affordable trip overseas would have the freedom to travel when prices are low during the off-peak period.

Meanwhile, Midlands Co-op Travel has reported an increase in the amount of interest in trips to non-eurozone destinations, such as Bulgaria and Turkey.

This was found to be partly because they offer better exchange rates, although the firm added traditional eurozone hotspots are still very popular, especially with families.

This is a very interesting concept. Has anybody our there tried it and what were the consequences of taking your child away during term time?
